Gavari’s Children

Traditionally for Bhil children Gavari season has been a time of delight and responsibility. Delight because of the strange and wonderful stories & characters who come to their village; and responsibility for the boys because they know their turn is coming and they must learn the songs, dances and characters they themselves will some day play.

This gallery offers glimpses of both sides of that story – how Gavari engages them and how they learn to play. What is not shown here and which is critical are the thousands of Bhil children in the “better” schools where Gavari culture is derided and they’re no longer granted leave to accompany their elders on tour.
